Motorola has quite a few smartphones on the market today, not quite as many as HTC but they still have quite a few. They have the Droid RAZR Maxx, Droid RAZR, Droid 4, and Droid Bionic all on Verizon’s network right now. And they have many other phones on other carriers like AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. However it turns out that Motorola actually wants to have less phones instead of more.
So The Verge sat down with Motorola’s CEO Sanjay Jha and they had a conversation and Jha ended up saying that Motorola plans to produce fewer pieces of hardware in the future. Now that’s kind of odd for Motorola to say that after just announcing quite a few new phones at CES 2012 and a partnership with Intel to produce Intel phones. But it does make some sense as well.
If you look at HTC they really were big last year but this year they just aren’t quite as big. If you look at how many smartphones HTC put out last year compared to this year you’ll probably see that HTC really tried to put out many more phones this year. And in the end having let’s say five phones on just one carrier from the same OEM just might confuse the customer. Having one really perfected smartphone on each carrier would be a much better option. Both Samsung and Apple have that kind of approach and they’ve done really well over the past year.
