SD Association Is Working To Standardize Wireless Data Transfer

SDHC CardI’ve personally gotten into the habit of taking pictures with my DSLR, and then taking out the SDHC card when I’m done and then putting that SDHC card into a card reader to get the pictures onto my computer. That’s what most people have gotten used to, but there are other ways to take pictures and access those pictures. We’ve seen smart cameras with WiFi built right in that allow you to connect to your camera using WiFi and we’ve also seen SD cards like the Eye-Fi cards that allow you to access pictures on any camera using WiFi.

The problem with the Eye-Fi cards is that they tend to cost a little extra and because of that there are many people who just would rather get a cheaper SD card or an SD card with more storage for the same cost. One way to make these Eye-Fi cards cheaper is to standardize them and that’s exactly what the SD Association is doing. They are working to standardize the wireless SD card technology.

Their standard uses 802.11ABGN to allow you to wirelessly access SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards that are both micro cards or full sized cards. This standardization that the SD Association is setting up could make wireless SD cards quite a bit more mainstream and common across many different companies that make SD cards which could in the end make the cost go down quite a bit.
