At first Intel’s Ivy Bridge chips were expected to arrive this April which isn’t too far away. But it looks like Intel won’t actually launch their Ivy Bridge processors until June of this year.
We don’t have any actual confirmation from Intel on this but the facts do make some sense. Supposedly Intel has quite a few Sandy Bridge processors out there that haven’t been sold. Intel seems to want to have a small amount of Sandy Bridge processors being sold by the time they launch their Ivy Bridge chips.
The delay of the launch of these Ivy Bridge chips should be a few months meaning we should start seeing Ivy Bridge this June. However Intel should still ship a small volume of Ivy Bridge chips out in April probably so OEMs can start working on their Ivy Bridge systems a little bit early so they are ready to start selling in June.
For the most part the performance increase with Ivy Bridge is only as far as the graphics performance goes. The actual processing power of Ivy Bridge is about the same as Sandy Bridge.
However Ivy Bridge uses a smaller 22nm manufacturing process which makes the chips more energy efficient which is a good thing if you are wanting to purchase a notebook or tablet computer and have long battery life.
