If you’ve used any version of Windows that was released in the past ten or so years you’ve probably seen the Windows logo. The Windows logo really hasn’t changed much at all over the past ten years but things are going to change with Windows 8. With a completely new tablet optimized user interface Windows 8 will come with a brand new logo that quite a bit different than previous Windows logos.
The logo is really inspired a lot by the Metro user interface found with Windows 8. You see four square tiles lined up to look like a Window. So the logo is now less of a flag and now more of a Window which really does make sense, it’s called Windows after all. Microsoft wants the logo to be both modern and classic.
Personally I think maybe a brand new name would be nice to go along with the completely new Metro UI. Just calling Windows 8 Microsoft Metro might have been a better option. Windows 7 and Windows 8 are very different and to help decrease the confusion Microsoft might be best off to just completely rename Windows to Metro. You could get a Metro phone, or a Metro PC.
But overall the new logo looks pretty clean and really does represent the new user interface of Windows 8. We should see this logo again very soon when Microsoft releases the Windows 8 Consumer Preview or public beta on February 29th at MWC 2012. We’ll be sure to cover the update to Windows 8 when it launches since it’ll be interesting to see how it compares to the developer preview which we’ve been testing since the fall of last year.
What are your thoughts on this?
