Slow Flash Storage Could Be Bottlenecking Your Fast Smartphone

SD CardIf you were going to buy a smartphone and it was offered in sizes of 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB and they all had the same price chances are you’d purchase the smartphone with 64GB of storage. For the most part the more storage the better but really the capacity doesn’t directly relate to speed and performance. Think about a computer with a 1TB hard disk drive or a computer with a 32GB SSD. Even though the computer with the hard drive has much more storage it’s going to be a whole lot slower than the computer with the SSD.

The same sort of speed difference even applies from SSD to SSD or SD card to SD card. Some research has been done with smartphones and different flash memory for storage. The research shows that if you have a slower SD card your otherwise fast smartphone might not be performing at it’s full speed. The difference between a slow SD card and a fast SD card can result in a 100 percent to 300 percent speed difference. Even battery life gets decreased with a slow SD card.

If you’ve ever taken pictures with a DSLR you’ll probably know what I’m talking about here. In burst mode where you take picture after picture after picture really quickly a slow SD card will really decrease the amount of pictures you can get per second. That’s why  most people would recommend getting the fastest SD card possible for your DSLR so you get the best performance.

The same thing sort of applies with smartphones. If you get a smartphone with a slow MicroSD card or slow internal storage the phone will be slow even if the smartphone has a fast processor and lots of RAM. I’d also say the same applies with a computer. If you can afford an SSD get one. Installing a solid state drive in my computer was the best thing I had ever done to the system.

Do you own an SSD?
